Sorry, this was confusing: Some device drivers allow you to get to 
multiple channels by opening ("cloning") /dev/dsp ... another poster 
suggested thismight be the case, but the Delta 1010LT is not one of 
them: if one process opens /dev/dsp, no others can.  It does not have a 
cloning-type device driver.

Understood, and not applicable in my case: my application opens multiple 
devices in the same process.
