I also use Debian. Some time ago, after some upgrade I have experienced
similar problems with the mic which "mysteriously" stopped working...

I eventually discovered that the problem was related (as already suggested
by others) to mic power. It looks like previous version of kernel/ALSA did
enable some "standard" mic power by default, while newer versions do -at
least with some hardware- provide a direct control for that. Unfortunately,
it looks like the default behavior have changed, leading to our troubles.

In my desktop system (which use an Intel MB with ICH5 audio chipset), ALSA
mixer provides a "V_REFOUT" slider... that was it... try and see if you can
find it (or something similar).

BTW: in my mixer I have 4 options (values) for it:

High-Z
3.7 V
2.25 V
0 V

while the last 3 are quite obvious (though I don't know which is the "right"
setting for "standard" mics, mine works with either 3.7 o 2.25 volts) I have
no idea what does the first one means. Does it provides any voltage? What are
the differences with the others?

If someone has some more info, please advice... I'm a curious one. 8:-)

Ciao,
