This doesn't seem to have changed anything. Just to be sure, I have
tried reinstalling using Adept Package Manager, and also using
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-`uname -r`
and
sudo aptitude reinstall linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic

I then purged the alsa packages, as previously instructed, rebooted,
and reinstalled them. And rebooted again. Apparently no change.

Am I being really stupid here? What can I have missed?
