Incoming calls and ALSA driver snd-via82xx-modem

I want my modem to receive incoming calls. I can do outgoing calls using
the alsa driver snd-via82xx-modem and the utility slmodem; however, when
I receiving an incoming call, the modem never reacts.

In minicom, with my old modem, I used to do this:

ATS0=2

And when a call would arrive, I'd see the modem print "RING," but with
this modem (and snd-via82xx-modem), nothing happens. However; my modem
*can* recognize incoming calls, because when I build the proprietary
"slamr" module and insert it into the kernel, the modem "RINGs" when I
ring the modem ;-)

However, I'm having problems building slamr now, and I'd like to avoid
tainting the kernel anyway. Is there a way I can configure
snd-via82xx-modem to enable incoming calls?
