After reading your mail again, I noticed a few things more, see in the text.

Several things here:- try with something simpler than Ardour (as you suggest) to check first ALSA, then JACK. Since Jack runs on ALSA you first need to make sure ALSA runs without problems. Setup Alsaplayer on your pc, and make sure you have a version that can interface to ALSA and JACK. If not available, compile it yourself with the needed config switches. These are noted in the file INSTALL or README.
Play a wave file with ALSA "alsaplayer -i gtk". (default uses Alsa) If that works, start JACK and try with "alsaplayer -i gtk -d jack"
What I find strange is the complaint about /dev/dsp. This means the app is trying to use OSS or oss-emulation under alsa. So are you sure that alsa is running?
How do you start JACK? I guess you use Suse, but Suse defaults to aRts sound deamon. Is that one disabled? If you use Qjackctl, you get a nice interface where you see your connections, can set samplerate etc. It also contains an option to shutdown the aRts sound deamon if it is running.

No need to reimage your pc. You can use several kernels on the same machine and select at startup which one to use. Install/compile a new kernel, put it in the correct place in the /boot directory and add a line to Grub (IIRC Suse uses Grub). Check the documentation of your distro (or the distro forum about that as the details vary)
No problem with 64bit kernels, using one for 1.5 years with Jack and Ardour. But this works best if you have the kernel, alsa, jack and application as 64bit versions.

Maybe it is, that's why you need to clear Alsa before tackling Jack.
