As I understand it for linux and ALSA, the "firmware update" (more of a
firmware load) happens every time the us-122 is powered on.  It very likely
happens from windows also, just behind the scenes automatilly.  From my
experiences, using the us-122 mostly with linux and occasinoally from a
windows box, you should be fine.
