is tascam usx2y firmware update safe for windows?

I was wondering about this firmware update that is needed for the tascam us-122 usb audio device to work with linux.  apparently, OS X needs a similar firmware change.

Is this update a general upgrade, or is it linux specific?  that is, My housemate runs windoze (i know, but he wont listen to me) and owns a us-122.  I'd like to use it also with linux, but i dont want to change its firmware if it wont work on his computer still (or rather, he doesn't want me to).  Since i haven't been able to find any firmware "downgrades" or windoze specific firmware, I haven't tried for fear that it wont work and wont be reversible.

hopefully this question falls upon knowledgeable eyes.

thanks,
