I found the solution by combing through the gentoo.org sparc forum. I had to bandon *BSD b/c of problems with the USB support on them for the Sun Blade. The following has to be added to the X config in the device section, whether you are using XFree or Xorg: Option "reference_clock" "29.5 MHz" Other people also reported the value "28.636 MHz" as working.
