How to cause it to operate? If you have XFree86 installed from ports, can you upgrade to 4.4.0 which is the current version and see if that resolves problem? If that won't work, I'll soonish have a patch for ports to upgrade to 4.5 RC3, so we can determine if this is a current problem (that is, if you want to try it).
