Mark,

Thanks for the response. I have answered your questions in your text below.

For a "no devices found" error we need to know a couple things
from the log file if you can't send the long file itself.

1) The XFree86 version. This will be near or at the top. Something
  like:

XFree86 Version 4.4.0

XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-8 20040928112350 fabbione@xxxxxxxxxxxx)

2) Which graphics hardware you have. Assuming you don't already know
this, the /var/log/XFree86.0.log will print out something like:

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ??? chip name here ????

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x rev 100, Mem @ 0x40000000/24, 0x41000000/12, I/O @ 0x200/8

3) Which driver you are using. In the /etc/X11/XF86Config file,
or whichever config file the XFree86.0.log says it's using
(eg. "(==) Using config file: ..."), what does it say on the
  line that looks like:

Driver "drivername"

Driver "keyboard"
Driver "mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Driver "cirrus"

Usually, a "no devices found" means that the driver you are using does not support the hardware you have, either because the driver is too old, or is the wrong driver. But there can be other reasons.

Good day,

I am trying to install XFREE86 at debian on a compaq armada system. I'm
less than a newby on linux let alone XFREE86. I found that I even can
not alter the sources.list for APT. It is set by the installation but as
soon as I add a line it ignores that line. Still do not know why but if
i have to alter this file to correct teh error I encountered please give
the full syntax.

Now for the error

As soon as I give the command startx the error returns no devices found.
I would like to send the log file but that is residing on the linux
machine and mail depends on KDE which depends on XFREE86 so that is no
option an although the linux system is in my network (I can see it) ftp
does not work (both ways) telnet does not work (both ways) so I do not
see a way to add this log to thsi mail.

If you know a way please tell me.

With respect and thanks for the effort,

Richard Ooms
