aha! someone had a similar problem not long ago. mostly the installation is broken. a static library libbitmap.a in usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/ I see a pattern here as one user already had a same problem. Any strange things you saw during installations any 'o.k.' or 'cancels' that you had to go through?
