Okay, I tried _just_ this change and I still can reproduce the lockup (I found
another site that reliable does it).

Interestingly I have another detail: It does this in fluxbox, but it does
*not* freeze in twm or with no window manager. I have not tried gnome, kde,
etc.

I'm going to try the full patch next.

I have not had a chance to get the non-Xinerama strace for ya'll, but I'll try
to get to that this week now that I can reproduce the lockup.
