XFree 4.3 and LCD wont work

hi all,
i'm struggling for 2 days now and theres no end in sight.
i have an old LCD (siemens) which can do 1024x768@60Hz.
but every thing i try, XFree skips the 1024 resolution in favour of
8000x600 or even more obscure 1152!
the logfile for X says that the default 1024 exceeds the monitors
capabilities and locks the 1024 resolution.
in some cases i can manage to have the option for 1024 in gnome
(screenresoltion) but switching to this ends in a screen with lots of
pulsating colors looking like weird clouds.

the manual of the LCD says:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Line frequency 30kHz ..... 50kHz (multi-scanning)
Refresh rate 55Hz ...... 70Hz
---------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------
Horizontal freq. Refresh rate Screen resolution
31.47 kHz 70.00 Hz 640x480
31.47 kHz 70.00 Hz 720x400
31.47 kHz 60.00 Hz 640x480
35.16 kHz 56.20 Hz 800x600
37.88 kHz 60.30 Hz 800x600
48.36 kHz 60.00 Hz 1024x768
----------------------------------------------------------------

so my XF86Config says:
------------------------------------------------------
Section "Monitor"
        #DisplaySize 280 210 # mm
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "SNI"
        ModelName "MCF 3511 TA"
        HorizSync 31.47-48.36
        VertRefresh 55-70
        Option "DPMS"
EndSection
-------------------------------------------------------
the videocard is a Trident CyberBlade/i7 (onboard)

any hints?

thanks in advance

ulrich
