Ancient Epson Monitor with Linux Red Hat 9

I have a sample setup to learn Linux.

It's an old Tyan m/b with a Diamond Stealth vid card.

A sample load of Knoppix scrambled the screen _after_ the initial
 splash screen routine ran.

This same thing happened with a sample install of Red Hat 9:
the initial splash screen loads and the standard 80 col text of
bootup proceeds ok.

But then the old Epson VGA monitor looks like it looses the
resolution setting. Rez on this ancient monitor is no more than
640x480 and it will kick out other high settings, if attempted.

Monitor is an Epson model number E1181A

 Video Card is a Stealth 3d 2000.

 thanks
