The "nv" driver that comes with XFree86 didn't support the GeForce4 cards until XFree86 4.3. Alternatively nvidia has binary drivers available on their web site that should work with your current XFree86 version. The XFree86 project can only provide technical support for the driver that comes with XFree86, however. Mark.
