cursor problems with i810 DRI

I have not been able to find the solution to this problem anywhere, but I don't
think I am alone with it.  I was very pleased to get DRI acceleration working on
my machine, but not quite.
Problem:
Mouse cursor leaves a 'hole' in the display.  I fire up my app with the cursor
over it.  When I move the mouse, the original location of the cursor image is
blank and doesn't refresh, creating a hole in the display.  The hole goes away
if I shade/unshade my window.  Also, as I scroll the mouse across the app, it
intermittently disappears and causes display anomolies and artifacts (not cool).
Platform, etc:
I am trying to run an openGL applcation I am developing.  This also happens with
VLC (videolan dvd player).  I have a Sony Vaio FX290 laptop with a 1400x1050
display and an i810 chipset.  OS is Redhat-9 with a 2.4.26 kernel and i810,
agpgart modules plus MTRR support.  Running XFree86 4.4.0 in 16 bit mode.  My
desktop manager is Windowmaker (I don't run KDE nor Gnome).
