I have posted this problem on the XDarwin support boards and in several other places but have had no response. I have also emailed a bug report since this is what I believe the problem to be.
The issue I am experiencing is that I cannot get Xfree86 to run independently of the standard OS X Aqua / Quartz environment. I know for certain that in earlier versions of OS X you could run _only_ xfree86 instead of xfree86 inside Aqua by logging into the machine using the user name >console to drop you down to a text based login and then running startx.
I am now running Xfree86 4.4 on Mac OS X 10.3.2, and this is not possible. If you follow that procedure, what happens is that on running startx, xfree86 fires the XDarwin application (an aqua app) and then the machine tries to start the aqua window manager and hangs. This is not what I want as I am trying to be able to run _only_ xwindows, not aqua and Xwindows at the same time. It is most probably only a panther issue, but I cannot say for sure. I have tested several older versions of Xfree86 (incase a bug snuk in in the latest build) on several different machines. they are all running panther so I cannot say for sure whether ti affects older versions of the OS.
Has someone managed to get this working? Is there a possible bugfix? I have seen several posts saying that other users are getting the same problem, but no reply from anyone. This is a serious bug as far as I am concerned as it means I have no way of being able to run Xwindows only on my machine as an alternative environment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
