I believe I have found a bug in the Darwin distribution of XFree86. The problem occurs on OS X 10.3.2, but I think it applies to every version of Panther. I have no log file to send as it is not appropriate, and I do not know how to get it to generate one when this problem occurs. The problem is in the startx program, or something related. Effectively, it should be possible to drop out of the normal OS window server, and run Xfree86 from the console, simply by logging on to OS X as '>console', and the once authenticated, running startx. This used to work on OS 10.2 according to all reliable reports, but now on 10.3, it seems to always want to initiate the XDarwin Cocoa application. Obviously, it needs to start the OS X window server to do this, so it tries and the dies shortly after.
I have tried various versions of Xfree86 and they all do the same thing. I have reported the problem on the forums, but nobody seems to have an answer, and there are several other people who are finding the same trouble. It is very annoying, because it means that OS X 10.3 users have no way of running an X server independent of the default OS window manager (Aqua / Quartz).
It would be nice if someone could let me know if I am doing something wrong here, but if I am not, I would like to know if someone could give me time scale on a bug fix.
