I believe the current received wisdom is "sue Dell". You have, AFAICT, the dreaded "Stupid Intel BIOS Bug", which limits the memory to 1MB no matter what you tell it. Come to think of it, perhaps I was mistaken in telling the other guy silly enough to be playing with X on New Year's Day that it was mostlya laptop problem. Check the mailing list archives for the last month or month and a half, at www.xfree86.org; there's more technical detail there than you really want to know about. Take Dramamine first.
