question about r128 driver and an external monitor

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi,

I have a dell inspiron 4000 laptop with a native resolution of 1400x1050 which
I'm running mandrake 9.2 on. This is using XFree86 4.3.0 and kernel
2.4.18-23mdksmp. The video hardware is ATI Rage Mobility. In just the
laptop, everything works great.

Recently, I bought an external lcd monitor with a native resolution of
1280x1024. I reduced the resolution of my laptop to 1280x1024, and this
worked sort of. The problem is that the display is cropped at the right and
at the bottom and things are fuzzier than I'd expect. This makes me think
that the resolution is not what I want it to be-- also mandrake claims
(looking in drakconf) that it's actually 1280x960. Another interesting thing
is that if I go to external only mode (by closing the laptop or hitting
Fcn-F8 twice) then the monitor claims that it doesn't support the signal.

I've done some web research, but this is enough out of my area that I'm having
some trouble. I tried the display=bios option, but this didn't seem to have
any effect. I suspect it's possible to configure the lcd and the monitor
separately but have not been able to find examples that have made me
confident in my understanding how to do it.

My dream would be to allow 1400x1050 on the laptop with 1280x1024 on external
monitor. But, I'd be perfectly happy with 1280x1024 on both. I'd also be
happy if I can only view the external monitor when the laptop lcd is off
(being closed, for example).

If someone could point me to a person, a website, or some examples, that would
be of an enormous help to me. Attached or some files that might help.

Thank you,
Gann
