If you remove NVIDIA's drivers the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a from Mesa will get used (instead of the libglx.so of NVIDIA). This is all in software, however, and very slow. NVIDIA's binary drivers should have worked, however. I think with some kernels you need to pass "nopentium" and "noapic" options to the kernel. And of course, you'd want to be using the latest (4496) drivers. Mark.
