Your XFree86.0.log shows you have two cards in your system: (--) PCI:*(0:13:0) Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 86C326 5598/6326 rev 11, Mem @ 0xfb800000/23, 0xfebf0000/16, I/O @ 0xec00/7, BIOS @ 0xfebe0000/16 (--) PCI: (1:0:0) NVidia / SGS Thomson (Joint Venture) Riva128 rev 34, Your X-Server is configured to use both cards: (**) |-->Screen "screen1" (0) (**) | |-->Monitor "monitor1" (**) | |-->Device "device1" (**) |-->Screen "screen2" (1) (**) | |-->Monitor "monitor2" (**) | |-->Device "device2" It's choking of the second card due to the bug I mentioned. If you only want to use the SiS card you should make sure the Section "ServerLayout" in the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 only references screen1 (your SiS screen). Or if you have multiple "ServerLayout" sections, that the one you want to use is listed first.
