It really doesn't sound like this is a server problem, rather the client is allocating BIG pixmaps or something like that. You can verify that by running restest: http://www.xfree86.org/~mvojkovi/restest.c Be careful! If you run that app you'll want to run it by redirecting the output to a file "restest >& outfile" because it grabs the server and can introduce a deadlock if the terminal is printing the output while restest is running. Restest prints out the number of bytes worth of pixmap memory held on behalf of each client. Restest needs XFree86 4.3 or newer to run. Mark.
