1) Is XAudio used at all any more by modern desktop systems/applications (ie KDE)? If not, what is the de facto 'standard' at the moment?

If you're referring to the proposed Audio support for X11R6, I'm pretty sure it was never released. X.org is sponsoring the MAS project to do this now (see http://www.MediaApplicationServer.net )

2) On a remote X console/server, is it possible to enable transparency support? If so, how?

Define transparency support and how you think you turn it on on a local server. (At least what I think of as transparency support is a proposed future project not yet implemented in any Xserver, so can't be turned on.)

6) What tcp/udp ports do the different features of X require in order to work properly?

The X protocol uses TCP port 6000 + display number (i.e. :0 = 6000, :12 = 6012) XDMCP uses UDP port 177. The font server uses whatever port you tell it to.
