Under the XDarwin menu, select "Preferences". If the preferences window that pops up does not have three tabs labelled "General", "Start Up" and "Full Screen" then you are using an old verison of XDarwin and you should update to the latest version of XFree86 for Mac OS X. If you select "About XDarwin" from the XDarwin menu you should have version 1.1 or newer, which corresponds to XFree86 4.2.0.

Go to the XDarwin Preferences under the "Start Up"
 tab. Select
"Rootless" as the default mode at the top. Click
 "OK" and then quit
 and restart XDarwin.
