Hey Pete! Your are checking the wrong file. Debian 3.0 is shipped with XFree 4.X.X. So you should check the XFree86Config-4 File in /etc/X11 The XFree86Config file without the "-4" Postfix has only been used by previous versions of XFree. As far as i know all the XFree 3.X.X versions used the other file.
