Hi,

Use the NVIDIA drivers from the NVIDIA website, just download the rpm files and follow the instructions. My experience is based on problems with the GeForce 4, I found RH7.3 weak on support for NVIDIA hardware.

Subject: NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX - problem

Hi,

I am a newbie for sure.  I installed RedHat Linux 7.3 on a new AMD ASUS MB running NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX video card.  The install detects and runs in GUI mode just fine however when I try to configure XFree86-4.2.0-8 it freezes my system with a blank screen. I have tried several combinations. RH web site says that some NVIDIA GeForce 4 chipset (see below) are not supported by "nv".

I am not sure if MX is supported or not. My monitor can display up to 1280x768 H 63.9 kHz  and V 60 HZ. I only want 800x600 w/color. The BOIS says 32 MB for Video and the first probe finds the video card but the Xconfig list does not contain NVIDIA.

There is a driver update from XFree86 for the nv driver. It is not clear but they might now support the "NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX"

Any advice on how to configure XFree and/or download the new driver is appreciated. Do I need to get driver from RedHat or can I somehow use the xfree4.2.1 ?

Thanks, Michael

Release notes for RedHat 7.3

NOTE: The nVidia GeForce 4 chipset is not supported by the "nv" driver in XFree86 4.2.0. The XFree86 "vesa" driver, which uses a video card's VESA BIOS to initialize video modes, may work as a temporary workaround until official support is available in a future release.
