Am a newbie at Linux but I had this problem too. Though with a different 
configuration. What I did was this:

1. Create a new user and see if the GUI comes up... (It did. So that localised  
the fault to a particular user)

2. In the home directory of the user for whom the screen would not draw, I 
found a .xintrc file (I think that was the name) whose size was 0 bytes. For 
safety's sake, I renamed that file and tried starting again. The screen came 
up. So I deleted the file i had renamed. :-)
