Let me know if you need more help. But the Red Hat setup leaves that line in /etc/inittab as: x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon which is what it should be. There's no mention there of either gdm/kdm/xdm, that choice is handed off to the file /etc/X11/prefdm which checks to see if /etc/sysconfig/desktop exists. If it does and contains: DESKTOP="GNOME" then the OP should get a Gnome desktop on login. Editing /etc/inittab to something else would override a whole load of flexibility that RH built in by using the prefdm script. What does /etc/sysconfig/desktop contain? If it has either 'DESKTOP = "GNOME"' or 'DESKTOP = ""' then the gnome desktop should come up.
