What I finally did was to create an .xinitrc file in my home directory. 
Then I changed the call in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession from
startup=$HOME/.xsession to startup=$HOME/.xinitrc.

The .xinitrc file only has "gnome-session" in it.

That seemed to work without messing with prefdm.  Thanks everyone.
