For the former then you can usually specify a local .Xresources file (i.e. for Xterms you would have the following: XTerm*Font: 9x16 ) It is also possible to make all instances of an application uses different default settings for all users by editiing the /usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/ specific files. It is also possible to set up specific named instances of apps that start with particular geometries and font sizes for a particular user by editing the ~/.xinitrc file. (This will start those programs each time upon login). In the case of trying to use a different dpi font across all applications on the system you can either use the "startx -- --dpi 100" if booting into runlevel 3 , or you can edit the files specific to the graphical login manager that you use. Or if you just want to start a specific instance of the program once-off from a command line you could try "xterm -fn 9x16 &" Too much choice! Try looking at both the "X" and "XFree86" man pages for specific examples.
