I don't know Caldera so I don't know whether my reply to another post a couple of hours ago would
be relevant for you, you could still look...
A way to attack the problem (your info is a bit concise...) is to get the log (I assume you try to
run X using startx from your console, this is the usual way...)the log should be in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
you can look with your editor, it is more convenient.
At the top of the log you should find a mention of the version you are running and the XF86Config
which is being used.
If you are really lost post both.
If you are a bit more courageous check whether XF86Config really contains the changes you made
(nothing like hacking a file and having X use another one, it did happen to me some time ago :^)

PS as far as my scant knowledge of vim goes, you did use it as one should...
PPS for people not used to *nix: cases are important i.e "Ls" is different from "ls" etc... this
has tripped a few beginners

Title: XFree86(TM): Report a bug

Report a Bug

If you would like to report a bug or problem with XFree86, fill out the form below. If you would like a response don't forget your email address.
Fill out ALL fields. Make sure that you explain the problem in the "Description" field and that you explain how to reproduce it in the "Repeat By" field. These are different issues!
If too much information is missing from your request chances are that you won't get a reply.

If you do not have a forms capable viewer, or would prefer to not use the form below, simply send E-Mail to XFree86@XFree86.Org, but don't forget to include the same information in that email as is requested here.

1. Would you like a copy of your message sent to you? No Yes

Your name:

Your email:

Subject (should be expressive, 'HELP ME!' is not useful, for instance):

2. XFree86 version (the XFree86 version and patchlevel can be found by running the X server with the -version flag); state the actual version number, not just that it is the "latest" version (you can't be sure of that). Additionally, don't write things like "the version that came with RedHat 5.0", or, worse, "...that came with linux 2.0":

3. Operating System (include the version):

4. Area of the problem (Xserver, Xlib, xterm, etc):

5. Which X server (if the problem is with the X server, specify which one you are using, use text field below if more than one is involved):
XFree86 (The XFree86 4.x server)XF86_SVGAXF86_VGA16XF86_AGXXF86_8514XF86_I128XF86_Mach8XF86_Mach32XF86_Mach64XF86_P9000XF86_S3XF86_S3VXF86_FBDevnot server relatedOther, specify below

6. Video card. Fill this in if the problem is with the X server. Include details of the Card including the video chipset, RAMDAC and clockchip. Just giving the name of the card is not enough in most cases. For many cards running SuperProbe or scanpci helps to identify them:

7. Description. If the problem is related to the X server, include the full server startup output (the best way to get this is to redirect stdout and stderr to a file, with most shells
startx 2> xout
does the trick; you can then use cut and paste to copy that information into this form).
With XFree86 4.x servers, cut and paste the contents of the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.
Again, if you do not include the FULL server output with your bug report, the only answer you will get will most likely tell you to send that output...:

8. Repeat by (give the exact version of clients involved, try to describe the steps necessary to reproduce the problem; "see Description" is generally not an adequate answer):

9. Please make sure everything above is correct and your message.
If you wish to start over will clear everything.
