I upgraded by laptop (IBM Thinkpad model 560E) to redhat 7.3 the other day, and everything went fine except for I can't get X to start. When I do startx, it comes up with one of several odd displays (either vertical lines, random horizontal lines (like loss of sync), or the right 95% of the screen being solid white. It looks like it has a Trident Cyber 9382 video chip. I tried Alan's new driver from http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh and that didn't seem to help. I'm still running the XFree86 supplied by Redhat. I haven't tried switching to the XFree86 version yet. If you think this will help, let me know. I also tried putting an external monitor on the laptop and that didn't seem to help. (Either small thin squashed display, or the monitor seemed to give up and go blank) However, I'm not total sure that I got the config right for the monitor either. I'm assuming this is something stupid that I missed since it seems from reading the list that other people have gotten this to work, but if anyone has any ideas on how to troubleshoot this, it would be appreciated. Enclosed is the XFree86.0.log and XF86Config-4 files in case they are useful. (I stupidly didn't bother to back up the machine just before I upgraded it, but I may have a tape around here somewhere with the old working config on it if needed. However, it may have been using the old version of XFree86) (I also scanned the archives and the web, but most problems were either fixed with Alan's new driver, or were using XFree86 3.3.6) Thank you for any help you can give me. --- XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-8) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 23 January 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems.
