PS/2 mouse problem on HP

Mouse works sometimes / sometimes not on HP vectra vei7. I'd be grateful if someone could suggest a few more tricks to try out.

Hardware : HP vectra VEI7, PS/2 mouse
OS : Debian (Woody)

I've looked at past postings and I've achieved limited success using gpmconfig with fups2 mouse on /dev/psaux. At least there is an entry in /proc/interrupts with IRQ12 referring to /dev/psaux. Once or twice the mouse worked for about 10 seconds and then froze for anoter 10 secs. Other times running gpmconfig achieved nothing.

I moved from Suse 6.4 to Debian. I could always configure the mouse using Sax.

None of xfree86config or xfree86cfg works.

Any help would be appreciated.
