Thanks for you answer Dexter. I did finally get it to work by running
xf86config and specifying the generic vga driver, saving the config file,
then manually editing the config file, changing "vga" to "savage".
Apparently the savage driver is in there and works, but it is not on the
option list given by xf86config.  :-/  Once I got the native resolution
and depth working, I could tweak the rest of the options with xf86cfg.
