After doing some experimentation, I think everything *IS* working properly, but just taking FOREVER to complete.  I tried one of my gimp tests
and the UI *did* "hang" (I could NOT click on ANYTHING at all), but after about 10 mins (or so) it DID complete and everything started working
again (i.e. I could click on stuff, etc).

So, if anything this is most likely a gimp problem and has nothing to do with X.
