Stopping X Server

I asked this question once before, maybe this time...

Running XFree86 4.2.0 installed from tarball on RH 7.3 default.
With nVidia nv 17 32MB chip
I boot to init level 3 and run x server from clin
I can confgure the x server to start, but when I try and logout to command
line, it locks up with a black screen and requires a hard reboot to start
up. Ctrl+Alt+Bksp does no good.
Anybody had any experience with this problem before?

Thanks,
D. Jordan
