Not sure if this is how you would do it in Linux as well but in FreeBSD you 
need to edit your xinitrc file to startkde instead of xdm which is located 
here:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc

Once I removed the xdm lines and added the startkde all is well.  You need to 
keep in mind however that this can cause some security issues since kde wants 
to run through kdm instead, which is more secure.
