Re: monitor switches off after typing startx

There seems to be a misunderstanding about X3 and X4
X3 uses "servers" for instance XF86_SVGA
while X4 is one server XFree86 which uses drivers such as "vesa" "ati" etc.
To make thinks even "better" the format of the XF86Config is not the same for both versions
mixing and matching is bound to make a mess
one should
1. determine which version of X one is running either by consulting the log or by typing X
-version
2. determine which config file applies: some distro only have /etc/X11/XF86Config, in that case
one should check that the format is the right one; some give you additionally an
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 which -in that case- is for X4 while XF86Config is for X3
man startx should state the order in which the search for the config file will be performed
(usually if you have both XF86Config and XF86Config-4 and are running X4 then startx looks for
XF86Config-4, not finding it looks for XF86Config... if you have deleted XF86Config-4 for
whichever reason then X4 may end up trying to use an X3 formated config and will react
interestingly...)
