monitor switches off after typing startx

hello everyone,
maybe someone could help me.
I installed Red Hat 7.3 and configured Xwindows (within the
installation) to 800x600 resolution.
(I could see the windows desktop after pushing the test button - this is
the WEIRD thing)
When trying 640x480 res. (still within the installation) I could see
only a black window (but monitor was still on).
after rebooting, logging in and first typing "startx" the monitor goes
into the safe mode. The only way how to get off this
situation is to reboot. I tried to use the Xconfigurator to change the
resolution, color depth or monitor, but unsuccesfull.
(sometimes the monitor didn't go safe mode, but still stayed black).
In MSwin. both 640x480 and 800x600 resolution (16b) is possible.

My comp: Pentium 100MHz, 64MB RAM
Monitor: ADI MicroScan 2E (exactly this type is involved in RH
installation)
gr.card: Trident TGUI9680 (autodetected, supported by both XFree86 3.3.6
and 4.2.0)

here are the possible problems from XFree86.0.log:
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device) # I
don't suppose this to be the problem
...

and simillar rows with various resolutions follow.
I don't know how to fix it, and mainly: I have no clue, WHY?
(I saw the desktop in the installation proces!!)

thank you for any hint
Karel
