It works!  The backlight turns off as expected. The only change I had to make was to
comment out the following line:
OUTB(0x3CF, DPMSCont);
at the end of the case structure because it was writing register 0x24 with the DPMS data
intended for register 0x23.

So, what does this mean?  It would be nice for my fellow I-Opener users to take advantage
of this feature but I don't know if you're willing to put this into the official trunk.
I'm still curious why "normal" DPMS with hsync and vsync don't work on the I-Opener.  Is it
common for laptops to work with just hsync and vsync turned off?  I'll keep playing around
with the BIOS and APM settings to see if I can figure out what's going on.
