[Newbie]Setting up multihead with multiple PCI cards

I want to set up multihead on my linux machine -- it has (3) S3 Virge DX 
2MB PCI cards -- and when I go to scan the PCI bus using the following 
command: 

XFree86 -scanpci   

nothing happens -- how am I to set up multiple displays if I cannot scan 
the PCI bus?  And why doesn't XFree86 return anything?
