You can, however, specify different XF86Config files to use, either via the 
command line or via an environment variable. Run 'man XF86Config' for the 
details. It'll probably be easiest if you create a little wrapper script or 
two rather than edit 'startx' itself (which might get overwritten on future 
upgrades).
