Hi Rik,

you don't tell us what OS/version you are running, etc.  For me
with RH7.2 (updated with all current errata using their up2date utility)
and with a development kernel (2.4.18-0.16) I find that zlib was available
as an rpm  zlib-1.1.3-25.7.i386.rpm 

[oisin]$ rpm -qf /usr/share/doc/zlib-1.1.3/
zlib-1.1.3-25.7

If you have an RPM based Linux distro then you should be able to find it
on The zlib homepage is http://www.gzip.org/zlib/

Further questions should be taken to a list that deals with general *NIX 
installation problems.
