(I wanted to try the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL route, but didn't realize that this would cause problems with building the registry in a no-Windows install.) The workaround I found was to start wineserver manually once (to create the server socket). I could then run regedit or regapi to create the registry (even though wineserver fell over). From that point on, wine started normally. I agree with Eduardo that using --with-nptl is probably the better route, but if you don't want to do that, try the trick above to create your registry, and see if wine won't then start for you.
