put a

[Drive W]
"Path" = "/usr/local/src/wine-20030105"
...

in ~/.wine/config
if you are already using drive W, choose some unused letter.  IMO the
user who runs wine should not own the wine source tree, so I have
created a different user to own the source and apply patches to it
on my machine.
