Dear all,
We invite you to submit an abstract to our session *"Volcanic Island
Geohazards: recent lessons, current challenges and future developments"*
within *Theme: 2. Pre and syn-eruptive monitoring.* Abstract submission is
now open *until* *20th December 2024*.

*Session Description:*
As illustrated by the 2018 lateral collapse, eruption and tsunami at Anak
Krakatau, the 2019 Whakaari disaster, and the 2022 Hunga Tonga Hunga
Haâ??apai explosive eruption and tsunami, volcanic islands are dynamic
landforms that can generate multiple syn-eruptive hazards including
pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), ashfall, and tsunami. Understanding
the magnitude, frequency, and nature of past events on island volcanoes is
crucial for improved hazard and risk assessment, particularly for
vulnerable surrounding communities. Recent technological advances and
heightened interest amongst scientists and public alike highlighted the
importance of advancing knowledge of island volcanism and related hazards.
This session addresses these hazards and associated research challenges. We
invite submissions that utilise *physical volcanology, tephrochronology,
geophysical techniques, remote sensing, and modelling *to *reconstruct
eruptive histories*, *establish frequency-magnitude relationships*,
and *understand
potential for flank collapse, PDC, and tsunami scenarios*. Presentations
that explore socio-economic implications and/or combine local knowledge to
study these hazards are welcome.
