Dear colleagues,

Abstract submission is open for the IAVCEI 2025 Scientific Assembly in
Geneva, Switzerland between 29 June and 4 July 2025:
https://on-line-form.eu/iavcei2025sa/abstracts/index.php
<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/on-line-form.eu/iavcei2025sa/abstracts/index.php__;!!IKRxdwAv5BmarQ!dTeqC6SsJwzGwVxOa-23TyCQ7I7rnesyjxA2zbCBifxORWlDWEb8X9Yp3arfZy421QZtn8y_9q-jIUC5makDO7xH1w$>

We invite submissions to our session: *The role of water in explosive
eruptions and their products*.

*Session Description:* Tephra can create the furthest reaching impacts from
volcanic eruptions. Over the last few decades, our understanding of tephra
generation, transport, deposition and preservation has greatly advanced,
leading to improved modelling, forecasting and mitigation of the associated
hazards. New observational techniques and recently identified processes
mean this critical research is continuously evolving and improving,
although interactions with water can complicate such investigations. This
session aims to explore our current and future directions for understanding
the role of water in explosive eruptions. Submissions on the dynamics of
wet eruption columns/clouds, their partial or total collapse, phase
transitions*,* ash aggregation, and the role of water on tephra
sedimentation are encouraged. We aspire for a cross-disciplinary meeting of
field geologists, physical volcanologists, geochemists, atmospheric
scientists and hazard modellers, bringing together numerical, experimental,
field and observational studies in anticipation of strengthened
collaborations to ultimately improve hazard preparedness and lower risk
from water-influenced eruptions.

*This session is sponsored by the IAVCEI Commission on Tephra Hazard
Modelling and WMO Advisory Group on Volcanic Science for Aviation
Applications (AG-VSA).*

Please note that abstract submission closes on 20 December 2024.

We look forward to seeing many of you next year!

Many thanks,
Alastair Hodgetts (University of Edinburgh, UK), on behalf of the conveners
