Dear Colleagues and friends,

In the frame of the project MUSUNGU (*MU*ltidisciplinary *S*t*U*dy of the
Chemistry from the Mantel to the Atmosphere on the volcanos Nyirago*NG*
o-Nyam*U*ragira in the East African Rift System) we have a postdoc position
to offer starting in February 2023 or at your earliest convenience
afterwards.

All information for the application can be found here:

(Unfortunately, only available in Italian â?? however the colloquium will be
in English, we offer an international environment and the project is
carried out together with Partners from the University of Mainz and
Heidelberg, Germany; UCLA, United States; CNRS France; OVG, DRCongo and
University of Napoli, Italy. For any difficulty or questions for the
procedure in the application please donâ??t hesitate to ask
nicole.bobrowski@xxxxxxx)

The deadline for the application is rather short (4th of December 2023),
but it is an exciting project. The project â??MUSUNGUâ?? aims to make a step
forward on the important questions of how much kinetic chemistry in the
first moments after gas release influences the commonly measured volcanic
gas composition. This might revise: (a) magmatic redox state determination
from volcanic gas measurements, which is important also for eruption
forecast, (b) our present understanding of autocatalytic conversion of
volcanic halogen species in the atmosphere, and also (c) last but not least
might impact the determination of volcanic gas composition from melt
equilibria, which has been used for example in studies of Earthâ??s early
atmosphere. â??MUSUNGU" is a primarily field-based, experimental project, but
includes also modelling, it will take up the challenge of measuring hot
volcanic gases immediately after release from the melt, with particular
attention to volcanic redox couples, to prove or disprove recent modelling
studies that predict a potentially large deviation from the usual
assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium (TE).

You will become part of the team and should have experience either in
spectroscopy and field measurements or in chemistry modelling. It is
obligatory to have the Ph.D. degree (in Physics, Chemistry, or Geology)
achieved before the 4th of December 2023. For more detailed information,
please contact:

Nicole.Bobrowski@xxxxxxx

And if you know colleagues who could be interested on the position please
forward this mail.
