Dear community,

We have an exciting PhD project at the University of Sheffield (UK) titled
"Automated analysis of volcano imagery with machine learning techniques".
The main aims of the project are:

1) Develop a fully-automated, robust, processing procedure for ultraviolet
(UV) SO2 camera data, utilising machine learning and computer vision
techniques. This will make use of large quantities of SO2 camera data
currently being acquired by permanent installations at a number of
volcanoes worldwide.

2) Utilise the new tool to investigate volcanic activity at case study
volcanoes (Kilauea, US; El Reventador, Ecuador).

Candidates should be proficient in computer programming (desirably Python)
and have a good understanding of quantitative research.

The successful applicant will be given opportunities to present their work
at international conferences. Depending on the applicantâ??s experience and
motivation, there may be opportunities for field work to deploy and/or
maintain UV camera systems on/around active volcanoes.

Funding: EPSRC DTP Funded 3.5 year studentship covering fees and stipend at
the basic UKRI rate (£18,622 per annum for 2023). An RTSG of up to £4500
over the funded period for research expenses. This opportunity is only
available to UK students.

Closing date: 14th January 2024
